Personal Gear Guru – Charles J.

This question was sent to me via our free Personal Gear Guru service by Charles J. asking about booming an Elinchrom Quadra head and 2×3′ softbox using a Master C-Stand, Grip Head & Grip Arm combination.
I’m looking for a boom stand and to support and Elinchrom Ranger Quadra head (very light) with a Elincrom deep octa box (27.5″) or an Elinchrom soft box (approx 2′ x 3′). Would a Master C stand 30″ with a grip arm work fine? As for the grip arm with big handle, would 40″ be too big or 20″? By the way, great videos! Very instructive and good tips.

Hey Charles,
The 30″ Master C Stand with a grip arm (and grip head) would work perfectly for your needs.  I’d recommend our latest addition to the Kupo Grip line, the 40″ Hex Grip Arm for a few reasons.
#1 – The 20″ arm is quite short and once you lose a couple of inches in the grip head, you are dealing with approximately 18″ maximum. That is approximately the distance between your elbow and finger tips (depending upon your height). If you ever were going to use your 2×3′ soft box horizontally, you’d want enough reach  so you can comfortably stand directly under it and have some freedom of movement.
#2 – Another advantage of having a longer arm is that if you are ever going to use this to give you a hair light, it’s long enough so that your background stand can be placed out of frame to give your subject a bit more freedom of movement.
#3 – You can take advantage of our exclusive 40″ Hex Grip Arm. Our grip arm has a hex pin machined on the end of the grip arm so when you place larger modifiers such as your 2×3′ soft box, you will get no unwanted rotation. We only have this in the 40″ version for the time being.

I hope I have answered your question. If there is anything else I can help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for the feedback on our videos! We are in the process of producing several dozen more this year. Hopefully by Monday we should have 20 or so new one’s to add to our Video Theatre.
