Kit Stands – Handy Stand

Continuing with our Lightweight Kit Stand series, I’d like to introduce you to “The Perfect Travel Companion”, the Handy Stand.

Handy Stand

The Handy Stand is extremely lightweight and folds down super compact (under 20″!), yet opens to a respectable maximum height (7’3″). This stand is ideal to fit in any standard size suitcase for travel and a natural choice for building a compact travel lighting kit with small lighting fixtures. This is especially popular with the off-camera flash crowd. All you need is a couple of these babies with your off-camera flashes, an umbrella bracket or two and you can create studio quality lighting anywhere in a compact, easy to carry lighting kit!

Kupo Grip Webinar #2 – Using Grip Equipment to Rig Off-Camera Flash

Join Jason Friedman as he shows you how to rig three distinct multi-light shots using off-camera flash while taking advantage of Kupo’s innovative, precision crafted grip equipment and Pocket Wizard’s wireless triggering systems. In this webinar you will learn how to rig, two and three flash setups, for an an executive portrait in an office environment utilizing some specialized grip gear and two studio shots, a beauty shot and lifestyle shot using the foundation of all grip equipment, the versatile C-Stand as well as a whole variety of grip gear. After this webinar, photographers will have more tools and tricks to rig their amazing off-camera flashes for a whole variety of shooting styles both for studio and location.

THREE FLASH SET-UPS

FLASH SET-UP #1 – EXECUTIVE PORTRAIT

In this executive portrait, I wanted to take advantage of our office environment using some Kupo grip accessories made specifically for this environment such as our Off-Camera Flash Alli Clamp and our Drop Ceiling Adapter with Baby Stud.

3 – LIGHT SET-UP

1 – Key Light in Umbrella Softbox: In this set-up, I used a Creative Light Umbrella Softbox on our compact and light weight Handy Stand as our key light. The umbrella was placed at a 3/4 angle to the subject about a foot higher than her head at a distance of about 3 feet. The Nikon SB-900 flash was rigged to our Handy Stand by using our Tilting Umbrella Adapter and Hot Shoe Adapter.

1 – Room Fill Light : For the fill light, I placed an Off-Camera Flash Alli Clamp to the arm rest on a chair and pointed it straight at the ceiling. Since this already includes a mini ball head and hot shoe adapter, the SB-900 flash mounted directly to it. This increased the overall room exposure.

1 – Kicker: For our kicker, or hair light, We rigged an off-camera flash to the drop ceiling using one of Kupo’s Drop Ceiling Adapters with Baby Stud, just behind our subject pointing towards the back of her head. The Nikon SB-900 flash was rigged to our Handy Stand by using our Tilting Umbrella Adapter and Hot Shoe Adapter.

FLASH SET-UP #2 – BEAUTY

In this beauty shot, I wanted to incorporate one of my favorite lighting techniques, using 3 strip banks to create a soft “ring light” effect by configuring the strip banks in a triangular pattern and shooting through the center of the triangle.

4 – LIGHT SET-UP

3 – Strip Bank Key Lights – Here I used a combination of both 20″ and 40″ C-Stand Kits, that consist of a C-Stand, Grip Arm & Grip Head to rig our strip banks as well as our seamless background. With the help of our 5″ Grip Pin, we had the ultimate flexibility to position our strip banks. We also used just the base from one of our C-Stands with Turtle Base with a Butt Plug, the affectionate industry term for a Stand Adapter with a Grip Arm and Grip Head to rig the bottom strip bank. We used the Creative Light Speedlight Speedring (see Nikon or Canon models under “Techincal Data”) to support our Nikon SB-900 Flashes in the Profoto 1×4 Strip Banks.

1 – Kicker Light – We used a 40″ C-Stand Kit with a Tilting Umbrella Adapter and a Hot Shoe Adapter to position our kicker, or edge light behind our subject up above our frame pointing toward the back of the subject’s head.

For Safety, for all of our 3 set-ups, we used a bunch of our 15lb Sandbags, our “Silent Grips” to hold everything in place.

FLASH SET-UP #3 – LIFESTYLE FASHION

In this fashion shot, I wanted to demonstrate how you can use top-shelf light shapers such as a Profoto Giant Reflector using only off-camera flash!

4 – LIGHT SET-UP

1 – Key Light – We used a Profoto Giant Silver 150 Reflector rigged with 3 Nikon SB-900 Flashes around a its central shaft using a Kupo 3-Way Clamp, 2.5″ Long Baby Studs for the 3-Way Clamp, Tilting Umbrella Adapters & Hot Shoe Adapters.

1 – Kicker – We placed a SB-900 in a Profoto 1×4′ Strip Bank and positioned it at an angle behind the subject opposite the key light.

All flashes were triggered using the amazing new Pocket Wizard Plus III Transceivers with Quad Zone Triggering Technology. Each flash had it’s own dedicated Pocket Wizard, that way from the camera position, I could turn them on or off so I could independently meter the results. These super simple units with advanced functionality will give you freedom and dependable triggering, every time!

All exposures were derived by the incredibly small and accurate Sekonic 308DC DigiCineMate Meter. Whether you shoot stills, cinema, pro video or dslr video, this little meter will get you perfect exposures every time!
